  1. I was first of all, was ill when you watched the beginning of the film, so I might not answer the questions further well.
    1. One particular scene that I remember, was the scene when Arnie finds his mother laying in the bed. Dead and gone. It was so emotional, that I could not stop my tears from tearing up. I remember Arnies face expression. Scared and sad. Poor guy didn't know what to do. He was speechless. First his father and now his mother. Now he didn't have any parents. Thats a scene that I could seldom forget.
    2. I think I can understand when he says that. You need to see things from Gilberts point of view, from his perspective. Somedays Arnie just feels like a burden, heavy to carry all the time. All Gilbert would like, is to be a normal man. He maybe wants to explore the world, but he can not, he is unselfish, and he stays to take care of Arnie. No one other can take care of him, the way Gilbert takes care of him. So somedays he is use to playing with him, and thats why some days he wants him to live.
    3. I think Arnie means that he doesn't want to be a burden for Gilbert or the rest of the family. So that's why he says that he can go anytime. Just say the words and he will leave.
    4. I am not sure how he changes, because I haven't seen the whole movie, but he probably becomes a better person, because they all do in Hollywood.
    5. The bit I saw from the movie I really liked. It was an interesting movie. It was real life. Not all characters looks like Barbie dolls, made up in China with their plastics surgery, fake nails and hair-extensions, these characters were real. That's one of the reasons why i really enjoyed this film. I love the variation in characters and sceneries, pure enjoyment. It is an unique and rare film, which I could recommend to many others in my age.
The movie gets 8,5 chocolate-chip cakes out of 10 ;)

  2. 1) one scene that I remember particularly well is the one when they set the house on fire.
It was really sad; Gilbert didn´t want his mother to stand out as a joke (because she wasn´t), so instead of letting - the police or who it now was that was going to get her out - he set the house on fire. If they would have gotten her out through the roof, it would have caused a crowd. (- and the crowd is not nice)
What they did I think was a really nice thing. It was really honourful, and thoughtful of them:)

I´ll take the other questions later.

  3. 2)Yes, that´s understandable. Arne is very demanding because of his disability. That´s probably why Gilbert sometimes feel that he "somedays don´t want him to live". But Arnie´s still his beloved brother, inspite of his handicap. Because of the fact that Gilbert has to take care of him even more now when the mother is a bit limited, makes the bond between them even stronger.
3)I don´t remember that line. But I guess he meens that.. or, no. I don´t know - don´t get the context.

  4. Molly, when Gilbert talks about Arnie in the introduction to the movie he says: "The doctors said that we'd be lucky of Arnie lived to be ten. But ten came and went. Now they are saying Arnie could go any time, any time now."

Arnie has heard this phrase but I doubt he understands it fully. He repeats it a couple of times in the movie. What else could it mean considering the circumstances they are in?

    ReplyDelete
  5. 3) ahh, okey. Well, he picks up a lot of phrases from people in his surroundings, and repeats them like a parrot. for example somthing like "daddy´s dead". he clearly doesn´t understand its message.
In this case I don´t think there´s any exception. He heard the phrase and understood that it was about him, and started to repeat it. I don´t think he had any particular motive.
4)I think that he got a new perspective on/of (?) Arnie. When Becky managed to get Arnie to jump in to the lake voluntarily, it demonstrated that things could change, and that Arnie wasn´t impossible to deal with. She gave him a new perspective on certain things, and a lot of love ofcourse.
5)I liked the movie. it was very touching, Leonardo played Armie exelent! it reflected the oppression people had, they didn´t show any respect towards the mother, and it especially showed how hard it is to take care of, and live with a handicapped person. But also how unconditional the love is to that certain person.

  6. 1. A scene I remember very well is when Arnie found his mother lying dead in her bed she just went up to, after several years on the sofa. I remeber it very well because when Arnie realizes that his mother is dead, he doesn´t know what to do ,of course, except to scream and cry. He can´t belive that what he see is true. And like Aijla does can I also remember Arnies crushing face-expression very well.

2.Yes, I feel like I understand him. Gilbert seems to have a very big heart and a strong bond to his brother. Gilbert has becomes more with the years a parent for Arnie. Gilbert is Arnie´s model of how to become a good person. Since the doctors had big doubts on Arnie Gilbert wants Arnie to have a nice time aslong as he´s alive. Even Gilbert loves his brother very much, he wants to have his own life without take care of anyone like it was his own child. It becomes harder with Arnie´s handicap.

    3. I think the same as Molly, Arnie doesn´t really understands what it actully meens. He is just repiting the most of what other people says. But I do think he has some thoughts of what it can meen, cuse when he say it to people their faces usually gets sad and often says some comforting words to him.

    4. When Becky comes in to their life’s, Gilbert becomes happier and he can have his own private life, more than before. Becky is a caring girl who’s not from the local town and who has other perspectives on life and people. I think that’s why she can handle Arnie on a way that “makes” him to a person and not just see him for his handicap. Becky managed to make Arnie jump in to the lake without he was feeling forced.

    5. I liked this movie alot! It was a very sad movie since people always where pressing Arnie and the rest of the famliy down. For their difference with an handicaped brother and an extremely overweighted mother who nobody seen in years outside their house. But it also showed how much two brothers can love each other. I think all of the actors made a really good job! :)

  7. 1)I remember that scene very well when Gilbert gives his mum a hug after coming home from Arnie’s birthday party. It was the highlight in the movie for me because in that part he really shows to his mum that he was her heroe in times of need, It was wonderful and made me a little bit sad. She appreciated and loved him for his enormous considerate way to take care of his disability brother Arnie. It made me understand that people like Arnie need more attention and love from the other familymembers.

2)In a strange way I can really understand Gilbert saying something like that, because of his incredible strength and way taking care of his brother, and it feels like it’s Gilbert’s cruel responsibility all the time... sadly, but that’s the way it is. Sometimes Arnie doesn’t listen what Gilbert tells him to do, instead he does what he wants to do and it makes Gilbert upset and angry. He also wants to have the opportunity to live and enjoy life instead of being like a lost poppy always running after Arnie. Even if this is Gilbert thoughts they often have very fun together like a real ‘’brother-relationship’’ and he still loves Arnie and he will always do because he is Gilbert’s sunshine in the dark.

3)He might means that he would leave in a short time or I think the same as Ajla, that they can say whenever they want him to go if he is a burden for Gilbert or the rest of the family... I’m not sure.

4)He changes in that way of seeing things more positively, for example his borther Arnie. Becky makes him realize that Arnie actually is an intelligent and a good person even if he has a handicap, but with different thoughts. Gilbert can enjoy life now like he never could before, with Becky, and it’s wonderful. Becky tries to make a god relationship with lots of love between each other. It’s like a new life for Gilbert, and it’s good ‘cause I think that he needs that after all they have been through.

5)I liked this movie very much. It was sad because it seemed like it was a real life. I couldn't keep the tears of my eyes, especially when the mother died.
The movie expresses a lot of sadness, hapiness and love and this is exactly what makes the film really good I think=)

  8. 1.A scene that I remember very well is when Gilberts helps a little boy up to their window so he can look at his mom. I think this is very sad and mean of him to do but I can also understand that Gilbert does it. Because he is tired of his mom because she never tries to make a change she just sits infront of the TV all day long.

    2. Yes I can understand him. Because some days Arnie is very nice and behaves and some days he dosen´t. In the movie you can see that Arnie gets on his nerves when he repeats a word over and over again. Or when he wants to do or have a thing he never gives up before he gets it. He is like a baby.

3.I think that Arnie means that if Gilberts wants to leave it´s okey by him because he is always ready to follow him where ever he goes.

4.He changes because now he knows that you can have a life outside their littel village. She makes him feel that he can do anything and that he have to be paitent with Arnie because he needs time. And to see life on the bright side to enjoy all days.

    5. I also liked this movie. But it is sad that I missed the end. But the rest was really good because it shows that life is not always easy. But it also shows alot of emotions as anger, love, happiness and grief.

  9. 1. the scene that remember the most is when Gilbert is beating Arnie because its the only scene in the movie when Gilbert finally gets really angry after all kind of things arnie does like climbing on the ``high tower´´ and always hide up in the tree.

    2. i think Gilbert said so because sometimes he feel like its his duty as a brother but some other times he feel like Arnie is a chain with a heavy ball attached to Gilbert.
Sometimes Gilbert wanna have freedoom i think.

    3. i dont really know what Arnie means by that maybe it is because he thinks of himself like som kind of adult because he is 18 soon and can do whatever he wants.
The reason can be because he always get how he wants, his mother want to spoil him because he can do anytime soon because the doctor said so that is maybe why Arnie can do whatever he wants.

    4. he became more happy and energetic. Before he even meet Becky he was always ashamed of him mother because of her weight. In some way he couldnt get over the fact that his father took suicide without even saying goodbye or something.

    5. i really liked the movie because i think its not often that you get to see these kinds of movie these days.
I rarely watch these movies so its interesting to see how the story is developing and what kinds of ending it will show to the spectators.

  10. I haven't seen the whole movie. I have just seen the beginning of the movie. I don´t think i can answer all questions. I had excused absence because i was working with "julrevyn".

    1. One scene that i remember was when Arnie climbed up on a three near the house. They where looking for him and knew where he was but they didn´t wanted him to know that. They played along and I noticed that they really loved him and cared about him. I don´t remember any other scene because weeks have gone now since we saw the first part of the movie. Im sorry but i really cant answer the other questions, im ready to another exercise instead./Jahed

  11. 1. I remember that scene in the beginning of the film, when Gilbert and Arnie stands by the roadside, waiting for the campers. It reminds me of when I'm either on the way home from or to the beach at my summer place. There is always campers pasing by with their mobile homes. I do not stand and watch them. I hate campers especially German campers.

    2. I understand why Gilbert says so, because he takes care of Arnie all the time. Sometimes he is easy to care for sometimes he is defiant and tough. Just like my little brothers and sisters, Though I have never wished I'd never had them. It is wrong everyone has a right to a human life. Everyone makes mistakes and is annoying sometimes.

    3. Don't know the answer at this question

    4. I don't think gilbert changed so much. He forgets Arnie when he is with her and he does not take as much responsibility. He is angry at his mother who just sits inside front of the tv and can't go out and walk or do something instead of just sitting around and become even fater.

    5. I did not like the movie. I think it is unrealistic and try to bring emotions in a false way. A mother would never sit down and just eat and hand over all responsibility to the older children even though the father was dead. She is behaving inappropriately and unreal. I've seen way more movies that are better and bring more emotions in a real way.

  12. 1.One scene that I remebered well was when Arnie found his mother dead. It was a very touching scene and I got escpecially moved by Arnie who found her. At first he thoguht his mother was just playing dead and started to scream to her and poke at her, i belivie that was a way to protect him from a mental damage.

It also showed that although he was mentally sick he still loved his mother and that he really cared about her.

2.When Gilbert said he sometimes didn't want him to live meant that Arnie was a burden for him sometimes, Gilbert couldn't live a normal life and had to look after Arnie all the time, he also hade to take the responsibility for Arnie's ideas.

But because Gilbert had to look after him I belivie their bonds got stronger and even stronger because it was almost Gilbert alone who took care of him.

3.I think Arnie said ”I can go anytime” because he knew he was a burden for the family and he loved them so much that he was willingly to leave for them. I also think that he wanted to leave the small village because he always tried to climb up on the big thing and the police always had to get him down.

4.After meeting Becky Gilbert had more freedom thoguhts, before he always thoguht that he had to stay in the small village and take care of his family but after meeting Becky he also thoguht that he also could live a happy life.

5.I neither like nor dislike this movie because it was a very touching movie about brotherhood but at the same time it was qutite boring, nothing really happend. One good thing about the movie was that it showed that families with a mental damaged child doesn't have it easy.

If I have rate the movie, I would give it 3,5 out of 5 stars.

  13. 1.A scene that I remember well is the end when they burn down the house with their mother, I thought it was really nice that they did not want their mother was mocked by the others when she died. I just wanted to cry when they just stood there and watched the house when it burned down.
    2. I understand exactly how Gilbert feels, he loves Arnie very much because it's his brother, but I think he is very tired of taking care of him because it is a big responsibility to take care of a disabled boy. plus it is
'not his own son, and no one helps him to take care of Arnie
    3. I agree with Molly, Arnie repeats what the others say. but I also think he means that he will soon turn 18 and can do what he wants.
    4. I think Becky get him to see the pose tive things in life also, he will of course fall in love with Becky also making him a happier person, I think she got Gilbert to see that life is much brighter than it actually is
    5. I loved the movie, because it had a really nice message and my two favorite actors were in the movie and it made the movie a hundred times better

  14. 1. The scene I remember the best was the scene when Arnie found their mother dead. It showed that even if he had a mental handicap he still loved his mother very much. I think it was one of the most emotional scenes in the movie.
    2. Since Arnie has a disability, he's very demanding and since Gilbert often takes vare of Arnie most of the time it puts a kind of strain on him. I understand that Gilbert sometimes thinks that Arnie is annoying (12 years of experience) since siblings often are annoying and have the worst timing in the world.
    3. He either means that he can go and do something else or that he might die at anytime.
    4. The Hollywood script says the main/side character has to change.
    5. I liked the movie, it was a dramatic movie, with the actors carrying the entire movie. The script was okay and nothing more.

  15. 1. I will describe the scene(s) where Arnie is sitting in the tree and wants Gilbert to find him. When I see Gilbert in that situation I can tell he enjoys playing with Arnie, and at the same time he knows that Arnie loves the game.

    2. Because Gilbert's mom has given Gilbert most of the responsibilty for Arnie. It gives Gilbert the feeling that he is living for someone else and not himself. And some times it might be too much, for example when Arnie climbs the watertower.

    3. I think that it means that he can die at anytime.

    4. He gets something in his life that isn't about Arnie. You could say that he gets something to live for, but that would be quite false actually as he is a person who lives for others.

    5. I think the movie is well done, I also think that it shows who it's to live in a family with some sort of disability. But it's important to know that all families with someone being disabled is living that way!

  16. 1, The scene that i remember the most is the one where Gilbert finds Arnie in the bathtub. 'Cause Gilbert thought that Maybe Arnie could give himself a bath this time. To see the pain in Gilbert eyes made me a bit emotional.
2, Maybe cause Gilbert is the one that always takes care of Arnie, the only one that can talk to him. And 'cause of this fact maybe Gilbert feels like he's not getting anywhere with his life. He is stuck in that town and dont know what to do.
3, That he can die anytime now.
4, Becky had a great inpact on Gilbert. He sees the world differently and he sees a meaning with his life.
5, It's one of my favorite movie's actually. I've seen it before and I like the purpose with the entire film.

  20. 1 The scene that hit me the most where th one when Arnie refused to take a bath, I think it was one day before his birthday, and Gilbert hit him. As a voyeur I could almost feel the pain Arnie felt and the heaviness Gilbert felt right after he punched him. As a watcher I also thought like ”Oh no, why is this happening? :((” It was an emotional part of the movie where you just hoped things would get better.

2 I can totaly understand him. It’s a big effort to take care of a kid (or would I say teenager?) with a handicap all day and night. But at the same time, Arnie is his little brother and he sees it as a responsibility to take care, especially when their mother is in that condition. ‘Cause he knows that no one other can take care of him and give him the attention he does. Not all of us can do it like Gilbert, he has a strong heart. I hope I would do the same and I would probably sometimes feel the same way as Gilbert expressed himself.

3 I think he means that he can go anytime - to not be a burden for the family. Or he just says it without actually knowing the meaning of it.

4 I think he turned in to a better person. Not a better person for others, but for himself. He met a young, beatifuul lady who showed him different perspectives of life. This meeting made him think less about Arnie and focus on new things, like love. I think he became a freer person who now tried to live every day the fullest together with Arnie and/or Becky.

5 The meaning of the film was great. It was true, pure and you could almost feel the emotions and characters. It was unique in a way, it’s going to be a movie I will remember and recomend to others. But it isn’t my film type, though, I’m more into actions/thrillers.

Btw, I didn't notice that the homework had a deadline at 10 pm.

  21. 1)The scene that i remember the most is the one where Gilberts mom tries to go up to the secnd floor. you think that the hole house is going to fall apart.
its a big sceen in the movie becuse she raelly wants to change.
2)it must be hard to take care of Arney and not be able to live you own life. And some times it might be too much.
3)I think that it means that he can die anytime soon.
    4) He became a more happier person. With something special in his life.
    5) I didn't like the movie. I don't like old movies. But the movie touched me, i got a bit sad when i saw Arnie and Gilbert.

  22. 1. I think the entire movie is a very emotional movie but one scene that I remember a little better than the others is the one where Gilbert's mom first gets up from the couch and then starts walking up the stairs. It shows what a strong person she really is and that she's not the kind of person who gives up. Then that exact scene is followed by Arnie finding her dead upstairs. It happens all of a sudden and it's not something you expect to happen. It's definitly one of the most emotional scenes in the movie.

    2. Gilbert truly loves Arnie and even though he says what he says, he always wants him to live but it's still understandable that he says something like that because a big part of Gilbert's life is based on taking care of Arnie and at some points it gets really hard for him. It's a struggle for the whole family but especially for Gilbert since ha has the biggest responsibility both around Arnie and at work.

    4. When Gilbert meets Becky it's like something good finally happens in his life and she helps him to get his mind of Arnie a bit and the hard life back home, which results in Gilbert becoming a bit more positive about things, he gets a new perspective of life and realises that life is full of opportunities and not only the bad things he has been through so far.

    5. Overall, I think it was a good movie. It wasn't boring, things happened almost all the time and at the same time it was very emotional which made it even better. The characters were really strong and you were able to understand their situation well which had a great impact on the movie.

  23. 1.I scene I remember very well is when Arnie claimd on the water tower, because it seems like that he likes to climb. And he does it so fast no one else sees him. He also climbs on roofs and trees.

2.Yes I understand how Gilbert feels. Because sometimes Arnie can be very annoying that Gilbert does'nt care anymore, so he wants him to not live anymore, and other days he realizes that Arnie is his only brother and that he loves him very much, but it is a big responsibility to take care of a disable boy.

    4. When Gilbert meets Becky he changes a lot. He becomes much happier.

    5. I did like this movie because it was little differnt from what I use to watch. And the movie was both funny and sad, which I like.

  24. 1. I remember the scene were Gilbert slapped his disabled brother very hard. That was the part that stood out for me very well. I think no physically mental person should get slapped or hit at any level. Very unacceptable
2.He means that Arnie is not easy to take care of since he's mentally disturbed but it isn't Arnie's fault and i think it takes a patient person like Gilbert to take care of him. Arnie is kind of cute so you would want him to live and be there with you and sometimes he drives you to the point were you just want to exterminate him and i don't blame Gilbert for feeling this way since he's like the man of the house. He's pretty much responsible for the whole family.
3.I have no idea but i'm going to take a wild guess since i didn't watch the first half of the film. I think he means i can do whatever he wants. Or that he could pass away anytime
    4. Still i dont know didn't watch the whole film but i think he really likes Becky and thinks the world of her and he somehow overcomes his fear of water.
    5. I think it was too emotional. I'm more of a comedy/adventure type but i think this film was good with the viewer getting a mixed emotion thing. So to sum things up i give this film 6/10 because it's just not my type.

  25. 1. The scene I remember best is the one when Becky and Gilbert are sitting together and watching the landscape. But then Gilbert had to go to give his brother, Arnie, a bath. When he comes back, Becky said, “you missed it!” Gilbert looked at her with a funny face and said, "what did I miss?" I think it’s a great scene because it really shows that Becky sees the beauty in any place she is in. And, that Gilbert really doesn’t pay attention to the beauty of life. One example is when they’re walking home and Becky wants to see their house and Gilbert says it´s not much to look at and Becky answers it´s so beautiful!

    2. I really understand the meaning of the sentence. If you have a brother like Arnie that you love so much, it´s really hard and challenging to take care of him because he is a handicapped boy. And some time you just want to leave but you won’t because he is your brother.

    3. I think that Arnie means that he can leave if Gilbert wants him to leave.

    4. I think that after spending time with Becky, Gilbert looks at life in a different way. Gilbert also realizes that he doesn’t have to stay in the small town that he has lived in forever.

    5. I like some things about the movie but there are also some things I didn’t like. For example, I didn´t like that Gilbert felt that he had to stay in the town forever. I almost wanted to scream for Gilbert, especially because he must have felt trapped in his sad life. And that’s one more thing I think Becky does for Gilbert. She drags him out of his sad life. But it´s a good movie and it evokes a lot of different emotions.

The scene that I remember the most is when Becky tells Gilbert that she wants to meet his mother but he didn't want it. That scene was touching me because he was ashamed of his own mother, I feel sorry for him and his siblings.
    2
I know that Gilbert loves Arnie like a brother. But sometimes Arnie may become too noisy to take care of and I think in this situations Gilbert thinks that ”now I am not able to care for him, I wish he was not here” .
    3
I think that Arnie doesn´t really understands what it actully meens. He is just repiting the most of what other people says. Or maybe he thinks that he can go when he wants to the point where he climbs.
    4
Gilbert becomes happier and feel safer when he knows that he has Becky on his side.
    5
I really liked the movie because the mening of the film was emotional and great. The message was clear and Leonardo played fantastically. I agree with Lukas that a mother would never sit down and just eat and hand over all responsibility to the older children. But the kids played their roles very well, it was them who made the movie good and not their mother. I think the film is a true classic movie, I have seen the movie several times but it never gets boring.
