Today's class

In groups of 3 agree on three quotes that you find important on p 13 - 62 in the novel (Un)arranged Marriage. Discuss why these quotes are interesting/important. Summarize your discussion in writing together.

You need one laptop/group. Type your 3 quotes + your reasons for choosing these particular quotes in a comment below this post. Try to write more than just one line! Also write your names below your post.

Be prepared to talk about the quotes and your reasons for choosing them tomorrow in class.

  1. "One day, Manjit, you'll be like me. Married to a nice Punjabi girl, thinking about babies." (page 13)

We chose this quote because it reflected on how his life was planned, all in one sentence. It's also interesting to discuss this quote because it's reality in some cultures. So it could happen everywhere.

"I found myself thinking of the girl with the ringlets in her hair more and more, and I started to do stupid things - like shoplifting anything that I could lay my hands on." (page 38)

This quote reflects on how much Lisa effects him. It also reflects on how love can change your lifestyle such as shoplifting becoming more intense and usual.

"I'M ONLY FIFTEEN AND I'M NOT GETTING MARRIED AT SEVENTEEN! I'M NOT! IT'S TOO YOUNG AND I WON'T DO IT. THE OLD MAN CAN KILL ME IF HE WANTS - I WON'T DO IT!" (page 62)

We chose this quote because it makes you feel something, and that feeling is interesting a great subject for discussing. And as a teenager you can relate to Ranjit and his feelings about the arranged marriage.

  2. Quote 1 : "IM ONLY FIFTEEN AND IM NOT GETTING MARRIED AT SEVENTEEN! IM NOT! ITS TOO YOUNG AND I WONT DO IT. THE OLD MAN CAN KILL ME IF HE WANTS - I WONT DO IT!" - we chose this one because it is the first time Manny lets it all out, all his feelings. He speaks up och tells his brother exactly what he is thinking.

Quote 2 : "Man, I was in shock. I couldnt stop looking at her." - We think this is very important because this is the first girl Manny is in love with and it's not a Punjabi girl. And this is also the point where he goes from not wanting a girlfriend to wanting a girlfriend.

Quote 3 : "He said that your dad has got some girl lined up for you, from India, and that he wants to get you sorted out as soon as you leave school." - This quote is important because this is when it's decided and it gets serious. It is now that it hits Manny and he really gets that he is getting married at seventeen.

  3. "No way i´m getting married" page 13

It defines his opinion about arranged marriage. He wants the freedom to choose who he marries, and what to do with his life. He doesn't want his parents to control his life. No one can tell him whom to love and marry, it's up to himself.

"What father-in-law in his right mind would want a theif and a smoker for a son-in-law?" page 56

It shows that he is willing to go to drastic measures to stay a bachelor, become a criminal just so he doesn't have to get married to someone he doesn't know. He even wants to risk his health because no fahter would give away their daughter to someone like him.

"If I ever brought a girl home I'd be dead meat." page 46

This shows how his parents feel about relationships before marriage, they don't want him to have a girlfriend before marriage because it would damage their reputation. It also showed how little freedom he had in his free time.

  4. One of the important quotes is that Manny find a girl named Lisa who is from England. He likes her a lot, but his family want him to marry him with a girl from India because they are old-fashioned. We chose this because we think it's important to marry to someone you like and that your parents have to chose to you.

Manny spend most of his time outside of the house with his friend, Ady. He hates his family a lot and because they care only about his brother and not him. They think that his study isn't so important like to get married. We chose this because we understand his situation,
if you get forgotten in your family things like this can happen, example to start to steal and not be at home so much.

Manny gets beaten by his parents when he tell them that he doesn't want to get married with that girl from India. We chose this because it's not aloud to hit their child. And that makes us scary that people today do things like this.

'NO WAY! I'm not getting married'
This qoute is interesting because he really doesn't have a choice. It is his destiny, to get married away to a stranger.A stranger he never meet before, never spoken to, never laughed with nor smelled her beautiful essence.
This qoute is important because this is what this book is representing - forcing a child to get married just because you want respect from other people.
'About how racist he was and what he thought of my friendship with Ady'
Racist is a strong and a inappropriate word. This sentence shows that people with a foreign background, has racist thoughts about other foreigners, not only english white people. But in this case it is about Mannys father and the way he is against everything that is'nt ''Punjabi''. If you are not a punjabi then you are nothing, then you are apprecited as the dirt on the ground.
Poor Manny couldn't help that he's best friend was black, and was there for hated by whole Mannys family.
In this book, we can read about the punjabi perspective and their thoughts about people and their 'unique' culture.
'After that I could turn off the lock on the Sky TV system and watch all the programmes that I wasn't supposed to watch - all the stuff I wasn't even supposed to watch...'
This is the way Mannys father protects him from the outside world, the bad society, the white peoples world. He doesn't allow him to watch everything, only Punjabi channels, he doesn't want the Brittish TV to influence him at a 'bad' way. So when they are off to the wedding, instead of throwing an enormous party, he instead watches MTV and watches Dutch movies and so on.

  6. Manny is trying to be criminal so that nobody wants to marry him

Mannys father wants him to marry a indian girl even though Manny wants to be with Liza.

Manny falls in love with Liza
the third quote is important because Manny wants to get marry with a girl. When they first meet each other they talk about books and they will be fallen i love. Love is important.

we think the second quote is importent because the story is most about this part. Manny doesnt want to marry a girl he never met and he doesnt want his father to decide things for him like his entire future.
Manny wants to go to university and do many other things that he cant do if he listen to his father and get married at seventeen to a girl that he never met is one thing he doesnt want to do.

we think that the first quote we wrote is important because he doesnt wanna get married when he is seventeen. he is trying to be criminal so that nobody wants their children to marry manny because he's criminal.

  7. quote 1: "Why you always trying to mess up the family's name?" we chose this quote because this really tells you allot about how the family thinks, in this case Harry, the family aswel because they don't say anything against what Harry said. You can see that the culture & the tradition comes first in their eyes instead of asking why he did it and get deeper into his mind. They also start hitting him, which made him explode once and for all and decided to fight back his brothers.
quote 2: "Man we checkin' out the honeyz, innit?" Ady would say, putting on an accent that mimicked the way that lots of young Asian lads spoke in Leicester. Our group thought that was interesting because of the way they talk sometimes. Its true in England most of the non-English people that live in the suburban areas do choose to speak like that, mainly because they think its cool to break the English rules and come up with their own words to replace the Normal words.
quote 3: I'M ONLY 15 AND I'M NOT GETTING MARRIED AT 17! IM NOT ! ITS TOO YOUNG AND I WON'T DO IT. THE OLD MAN CAN KILL ME IF HE WANTS-I WON'T DO IT! This is what the book is really all about (that's why we chose it) He's Finnally going to stand up for himself, and we can't wait to read on and see how his dad takes it.

  8. "i really diden´t want to go home not with the way things were with my familiy"

"I coulden´t wait for the day that i would be old enough to leave home"

"One day manjit you will be like me"

In these three quots we can se how unhappy manny is. He is avid to leave home and stand up for himself. He wants to make his own decistions. Mannys father wants him to be just like himself, a failure. He doesn´t want to listen to his parents and do things they order to do. Manny is raised to think and do just like his parents want him to do. It's his parents responsibility to make their own son happy, but they fail with it, because they should accept him, and let him make his own future without complications.

  9. quote 1)
"How could anyone marry a person they´d never met."

Manny thinks his family´s principals are crazy, and old fashioned. He would never even consider marrying a person he'd never met before. He was born in England, he´s brought up with England's structure and he is not willing to live a traditional Punjabi life like his parents. Manny's parents are (probably) born in India, and they were brought up under more strict conditions where arranged marriages are common.
    quote 2)
"sometimes I used to dream that I was adopted."
Manny isn't a big fan of his parents. His father hits him, his mother doesn't really care about him and his brothers are teasing him all the time. He would rather stay out all night with his friend Ady than spending time with his family. He simply dislikes his family, and he doesn't feel like he's part of the family, he's the black sheep.
    quote 3)
"you see if I´m not right. that kalah will lead you into drugs. I watch the news, boy, I know what these kaleh are bloody doing, taking bastard drugs. bad society. you´ll be stealing and smoking..."
Obviously, Manny's father is a racist. He has prejudices againt peolpe whose not Punjabis/asians. THis really bothers Manny, because his best friend is black, and his girlfriend is white. Manny can't even bring his girlfriend or his best friend over for dinner or anything, because of the fear that his father will embarrass him or do something physically abusive against them.
